Coffee Maker – Philips. (or as some know it as dexter’s MP3 player)

Around a year back I got this Phillips coffee maker and  am happy with it. Here are some pics, pros and cons for the same. The coffee make is quite easy to use in itself, and is almost self explanatory. I consists of a chamber (with the filter) which holds the coffee powder, this thing is placed in such a way that it easily swings out like a door. There is a Borosil Jar and that is the part coffee maker itself.

The water area (translucent c shaped are ) is marked nicely with minimum and maximum levels of water, filling it to the minimum level give you once cup of nice black coffee.

The powder holding area also consists of a valve like system, so if you have not place the jug/jar below it while you coffee is being made, or you want to take out the coffee jug in between to pour some coffee, then the coffee does not drip down, it only comes out when the jug is place below it.

The water pours in small shots, or ‘glurgs’ that’s how it sounds…. so you don’t have to worry if you have to take out the jug in between, but don’t keep it out for long if you have put loads of water to loads of coffee. Also the filter area is not too big and you don’t want you coffee to be spilled all over the place.

Almost one big cup of coffee is made if you fill the water chamber is filled to the minimum level. And that is my one time requirement. :D

Interestingly enough the coffee maker comes with its own hot plate (just below the where the jar is kept), so even if you forget that you had placed coffee to brew,  coffee collects into the jar and still remains hot because of the hot plate under it. Of course you have to leave it switched on ;)

So finally this cool coffee maker is one that will give you really nice hot cups of coffee.

So the  this coffee maker:

Pro’s:

  1. Very easy to use.
  2. The color combination is nice, white and lite lilac I think.
  3. To easy to clean… I would say no cleaning will be required if you are going to use it twice or thrice a day.
  4. Hot plate keeps the coffee hot, not just warm.
  5. Fresh coffee is ready in almost 3 to 5 minutes.
  6. If you like tea, you can try putting tea leave, It can be used to make black tea, even though I do not drink tea, I Have made tea once or twice for my parents, they said it tasted better than regular gasr stove tea.

Con’s:

  1. Not meant for making shots, look for some other coffee maker.
  2. The box pack comes with two paper filters only. Could not find any more paper filter anywhere else even with the service center.
  3. You will need to buy the permanent filter form the service center at extremely high cost. (I paid around Rs.280/- (INR) for the same)
  4. The glass jar is really fragile, have to be extra careful while handling it.

Others:

  1. Power Consumption: 650 Watts AC
  2. Capacity 600 ml.

And since you have read till this point… you might be curious enough to know why I said that “Some people know it as my MP3 player”. Well I had been planning to buy a portable mp3 player for a very long time, I went with my friend Zoyd to Croma Mall to buy the same, after looking at lots of MP3 player, I bought this coffee maker…
yes just like that.. no second thoughts… :)

Well that’s…
enjoy some coffee…

I’m surprised you got a drip coffee maker! I’d have thought you’d get an espresso machine. I have Inalsa Espresso maker at home, sadly can’t use it in my PG. I have pic of Espresso i brewed in my blog here:

What coffee beans/powder do you use? I myself stick to either Dark Forest or Morning Java from CCD.
PS: nice review though, loved the pics

If you read the article it is my mp3 player. I had not intended to buy it. One advantage of this one is that you can make tea also. Its seems to be quite fast and the looks were nice.
Any ways next time i might go in for an espresso types.
I have used different coffee powder’s, initially I used to get Mysore filter from Kalmane Coffee Bangalore. Then tried out some coffee from on guy who gives fresh coffee powder at Deccan (a lane next to greetwel shop).
Finally shifted to Arabica Coffee from Barista. I like the flavor and consistency in this one.

I bought this coffee maker recently and when I approached the local Phillips service centre ( Guwahati ) for the permanent filter I was informed that it was not available. Could you let me know what to do please ?Thanks

    hi
nice to know that someone took a similar coffee maker.
One thing you can do is get some filter paper of good quality, and use them.

Other thing i had noticed at my friends place was the the filter is of quite a common shape, i think it was koyro brand, check out with some local dealers of other coffee makers and see if you can get it from them.

Else you will have to keep pestering the Phillips people.

    Hope you get one soon.

BTW… one more thing, the caffeine content in drip coffee is more than of the standard espresso machine.

I am still pestering Philips for the filter. They have given me vague replies. I am quite fed up. I never imagined that a brand name like philips can be so bad, so woefully negligent of customer requirements. I wish I had never brought this product. Many emails have gone unanswered.
